A: We make every effort to place volunteers in their top choice of department. Your flexibility in days and times increases the likelihood of your getting your first choice in assignment.

A: Many Volunteers work in more than one department or decide to try a different assignment. New Volunteers typically work in one department for 90 days. At that time, they may move to a different department or add a department to their schedule.

A: Regular Volunteers (age 18 and over) are expected to commit to at least two shifts per month, about 100 hours per year. Some Regular Volunteers find it more convenient to work a four-hour shift every week. Days off can be arranged in advance by discussion with the Department Chair. High School Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment to volunteer six hours per month.

A: Volunteer work is divided into Departments, such as “Registration” or “Surgery.” Volunteers in each department are supervised by a Department Chair who is responsible for interviewing, training and scheduling Volunteers. Chairs are Regular Volunteers who are very experienced in the department they supervise. Departments may also have an Assistant Chair or Volunteers who act as a trainer.

A: Yes! Several Auxiliary departments offer shifts outside the typical work week. See the list of Volunteer Roles. Shift days and hours are clearly marked.
