TRI-CITY HOSPITAL AUXILIARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We have something for every talent and interest. Please review the options below to learn more about each of Tri-City Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer positions. The volunteer staff will work with you to find your best fit. Our goal is to match your interests, skills and time available with the needs of the hospital. Bilingual Volunteers are always a plus in any department.

Be an Auxiliary insider, helping keep the organization humming, supporting other volunteers along the way.

CLERICAL (AUXILIARY OFFICE)

Help keep things running smoothly.

  • Handle routine office work (filing, data entry, mailings)
  • Answer telephone and direct caller to appropriate resource
  • Operate various office equipment (fax, computer, copy machine, etc.)
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and e-mail is required
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
EMPLOYEE HEALTH

Serve volunteers and staff with their health-related needs.

  • Fill out and file receipts
  • Log over-the-counter medications
  • Open and check new merchandise, stock supply cabinets
  • General office duties
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

COURTESY SHUTTLE

Welcome all, shuttling visitors from the parking lots to the hospital

  • Drive a 5-passenger electric shuttle around hospital parking lot offering rides
  • Communicate with the Security Team via two-way radio
  • Valid California Driver’s License and insurance required
  • Hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.
GREETERS

Be that first smile with easy directions within the hospital.

  • Greet patients, visitors and family members
  • Assist visitors and family members with general hospital information and locations
  • Hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
INFORMATION DESK

That all important first point of contact for so many Tri-City Medical Center visitors.

  • Welcome all visitors and patients to Tri-City Medical Center
  • Assist family and friends locate patients’ rooms
  • Give visitor badges, room number and directions
  • Inform those asking about workshops and meetings held at TCMC
  • Receive and deliver flowers, mail and gifts
  • Deliver anyone, by wheelchair, needing assistant to their destination
  • Hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.
REGISTRATION

Help guide incoming patients through a sometimes-confusing process.

  • Greet patients warmly as they arrive
  • Assist patients signing into the hospital
  • Submit paperwork to Registrar employees
  • Answer phone and direct Escorts to various locations
  • Interact with patients in waiting room
  • Work closely with Escort Volunteers
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
GIFT SHOP

Source of much of the Auxiliary’s funding, the Gift Shop is a wonderful place to interact with visitors and staff alike.

  • Be knowledgeable of basic customer service and sales skills
  • Assist customers, patients and employees with purchases
  • Maintain, replenish stock and clean shop
  • Must be able to use a cash register, process credit card compliance and balance cash fund at end of each shift.
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 am to 7:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.

JOIN THE BEATING HEART OF THE AUXILIARY ON ONE OF THE MANY TEAMS WHO REGULARLY SERVE AND COMFORT PATIENTS AND FAMILY DURING THEIR STAY AT TRI-CITY MEDICAL CENTER.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Helping people through one of the most stressful hospital environments.

  • Act as liaison between visitors, patients and the medical staff
  • Offer patients, family, and friends a warm smile and a willing ear
  • Provide non-medical assistance such as changing gurneys, stocking supplies, making coffee, assembling medical and surgical packets.
  • Duties often require significant walking within the Emergency Room
  • Hours are seven days per week, including holidays, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm divided into four-hour shifts
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.
PATIENT ESCORT SERVICE

Be a guide as patients transition to their next stop within the hospital.

  • Requires good walking skills
  • Escort patients to designated departments after Registration
  • Interact with patients in the Registration waiting room
  • Assist with discharge from patient rooms to front of hospital as needed
  • Interact with Employees in Registration Department
  • Work closely with Registration volunteers
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
IMAGING

Helping patients through a variety of radiology and imaging activities.

  • Serve as a liaison between the staff, patients, and their families.
  • Greet and receive patients as they arrive to their appointments and sign them in.
  • Escort patients to waiting rooms.
  • Assist patients to fill out medical forms and paperwork while adhering to HIPPA guidelines.
  • Stay attentive in meeting patients’ needs and answer questions as they wait for their appointments.
  • Help patients to schedule appointments and pick-up medical records.
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU)

Be a comforting force for friends and families at a most difficult time.

  • Screen and assist visitors and staff into the unit
  • Maintain records of arrivals and transfers of ICU patients
  • Interact with patients and family, supporting them during a stressful time
  • Have a cheerful attitude, ready smile, and good listening ability
  • Spanish is helpful but not mandatory
  • Hours are seven days per week, including holidays, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm divided into four-hour shifts
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.
REHAB

Be a booster for patients along the road to recovery.

  • Liaison between visitors, patients, and medical staff
  • Assist in registration; non-medical assistance to medical staff
  • As required, change gurneys, stock supplies, run errands
  • Change linens for therapists; wipe down beds; escort patients to rooms
  • Opportunities are available for in-patient and out-patient.
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
SURGERY

Support patients and family during this stressful time.

  • Escort patients and families
  • Store personal effects, stock warmer blankets, pick up and deliver paperwork
  • Serve food and drinks
  • Make PreOp kits for surgery
  • Discharge patients in wheelchairs
  • Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.

WORK BEHIND THE SCENES DOING VALUABLE WORK IN AN INTERESTING SETTING.

LABORATORY

Help the healing continue, facilitating lab results throughout the hospital

  • Interact with medical staff
  • Assist nursing units with pick-up and delivery service
  • Make rounds as requested – significant walking involved
  • Dispense specimens from lab triage tubs
  • Assist with paperwork for lab front office and triage unit
  • Hours are seven days per week, including holidays, from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm divided into four-hour shifts
  • Suitable for individuals looking for non-weekday opportunities.
WORKSHOP

Put those special talents and hobbies to great use.

  • Make stuffed toys for children in Registration and Emergency Departments
  • Make tray favors for patients’ dinner trays
  • Make “Lovie Dolls,” a bonding blanket for baby, mommy, and daddy, and various pillowcases for the NICU Department
  • Make Christmas stockings for Labor and deliver in mid-December
  • Make a single white stocking, blanket, and cap for the first baby born in the New Year
  • Special sewing skills may be needed depending on the activity selected
  • Meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 8:00 am – noon.
SPECIAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Special Volunteer Programs are where hobbies and special talents are put to their highest use. Most of these programs require special training, abilities or certification. Music Therapy – The Tri-City Medical Center Music Therapy program is therapy for everyone. These amazing individuals entertain visitors and staff in the hospital lobby, Emergency Room waiting area, and even in some patient’s rooms. To participate in this program, applicants must:

  • Have an instrument suitable for individual performance of background music
  • Hours and days are flexible

Baby Caps & Blankets – Ask any mother or obstetrical nurse and they will tell you that a warm blanket and a snug cap are heaven to a newborn baby. This program draws on the time and talents of volunteers throughout North San Diego County, including residents of Fairview and La Costa Glen.

  • Working from home, volunteers knit and crochet baby caps and blankets
  • Specific directions are available by clicking here
  • Caps and blankets support both maternity and neonatal ICU unit.
